The Opening Doors Program seeks to educate UW-Madison faculty, staff, student organizations, and students living off campus about LGBT people and LGBT-related issues including sexual orientation, gender identity, coming out, heterosexism, and homophobia. The program comprises of two components: a participation-oriented educational session led by trained volunteers, and a written Resource Manual. It is designed to be flexible, allowing participants to choose the medium or combination of mediums which best suits the needs of their group.

Who runs the Opening Doors Program?

Opening Doors is run by the Allies Program, a student organization which seeks to promote visible support for LGBT people. Opening Doors operates thanks to the generous help of volunteers, and under the direction of the Opening Doors Chairperson(s).

What does it cost?

There is no cost to you. The program is funded by the annual Allies T-Shirt sale during the Spring semester.

How can I bring Opening Doors to my organization/department?

The Opening Doors Program is delighted to serve any organization, department, residence hall, division, student organization that extends an invitation. To do so, talk to your organization’s president and/or officers and obtain their approval and select a few possible dates. Then, send an e-mail to UWAllies@gmail.com with "Opening Doors" in the subject line and we'll set up a session.

How much time does it take?

The Program typically runs for an hour and a half, but time may vary depending on the needs of the attendees.

What can I do to support the Opening Doors Program?

The best thing you can do for us is to spread the word. Tell anyone who may be interested in the program, or in hosting a session.
